A Short History of Ireland's High Crosses

One of Ireland's most monumental contributions to the art of medieval Europe, 100s of High Crosses remain standing in Ireland today.

The tallest (at Monasterboice) is over 7m (23 ft). The earlier and most numerous group flourished in the ninth and tenth centuries.

Bible scenes, different on each cross, were intended to illustrate scriptural stories for the faithful and to induce piety among them. In this they are Ireland's answer to the frescoes of Roman churches. That people knelt in front of the crosses is suggested by the placing of significant panels low down on the shaft.

The ring around many of the crosses may have a structural function in preventing the indented arms from snapping off but may also have played a role as a symbol of the cosmos, at the centre of which is the Crucifixion of Christ.
