Gaelic, or simply 'Irish', is the official first language of the Republic of Ireland. There has been a strong revival in Irish speaking with 40% of the population claiming a level of understanding in the 2006 census. 'Gaeltachts' (Gale-tocts), predominantly along the west coast, are areas where Irish is still spoken on an every day basis.
