Stories from Our Customers: John & Sydney

Written by Liz Maguire on June 27, 2022 | 0 Comments

We were delighted to hear from John from sunny California when he shared that: “My now wife surprised me early last year on Valentine's Day with the silver Ardagh Chalice Ring...”

John loved the ring so much he “told her it could be my wedding band if we got married.” Three short months later John popped the question with another of our Irish rings, a White Gold DIamond Halo Ring, and “Almost one year to the date of receiving my ring from her, we were married."

After hearing from John we just had to follow up to hear the rest of their love story. Thankfully he kindly responded and now we can share their fateful story with you!

How did you two meet?

John: “About 5 years ago Sydney and I worked for a non-profit organisation in Southern California helping senior citizens in our area. I managed the transportation department and she managed the Meals on Wheels program. In what seemed like fate, we developed a very close friendship, and soon fell in love; we have been inseparable since.”

Why did you choose Irish rings?

John: “In 2018 Sydney visited Ireland for the first time with her parents. I was sad not to join her but really excited for her. She loved Ireland so much!! I have not yet been myself, but we promised to go back one day. While there, she purchased a Claddagh ring and explained to me the tradition of how it is worn. I thought that was so cool! It may have been then she decided I might like an Irish-style ring of my own.”

What's your favourite piece of advice for couples?

John: “It may be cliché, but always try to have fun. We have been on so many adventures together. We continue to treat each weekend as a vacation, and try to explore as much of the world as we can. Discovering something new together has bonded us that much more as our relationship continues to grow.”

Any honeymoon plans?

John: “The original plan for our honeymoon was to travel to Europe and visit Paris and London. A pandemic made those plans very difficult; so, we stayed local in Coronado Island, San Diego. It ended up being an amazing follow-up to our beautiful wedding. We still plan on going to Europe soon, and hope to visit Ireland, as well”

Comhghairdeas!

Congratulations, or Comhghairdeas as we say in gaelic, to the lovely couple! We were delighted and honoured to see our rings play a part in this beautiful love story and wish them a long and adventure filled life together.

My Irish Jeweler

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thanks to my Irish born father I was lucky enough to regularly visit Ireland -- and receive visitors from Ireland often, to my childhood home. This blending of cultures triggered my interest in Irish art and culture. My love for jewelry was nurtured by my American mom who is an artisan jeweler and dealer. I grew up loving Ireland and jewelry!

Now I happily reside in Dublin, having read Irish Literature and History at Trinity College Dublin. Having a passion for Irish literature, I am particularly interested in the work of poet W.B. Yeats. With the Celtic Revival in the 20th century, Yeats and his contemporaries did much for Irish arts and history. Many of our beautiful pieces at My Irish Jeweler are inspired by the myths and legends, as well as artwork, which gained permanence in Irish heritage as a result of the Celtic Revival.

I look forward to sharing the history and stories which influence the inspiration for our pieces with the My Irish Jeweler readers.
