The legend of the Salmon

Sought by many, legend told that whoever ate this salmon would become wise beyond measure. After seven long years fishing the river Boyne, the poet Finegas caught the great fish and, tired after the struggle, gave it to his young apprentice, Fionn MacCumhaill to cook for him.

While cooking, Fionn burned his thumb turning the great fish over. When he stuck his thumb in his mouth to ease the burn, Fionn unwittingly gained its boundless knowledge. On seeing the wisdom in the eyes of his apprentice, Finegas graciously gave Fionn the fish to eat. And the wisdom this gift bestowed is said to have helped Fionn become a hero and great leader of Na Fianna.
