The St Brigid's Cross is hung each February 1st to commemorate St Brigid's day, Ireland's female patron saint. The making of a St Brigid cross is a traditional ritual, hand woven from rushes or reeds the night before St. Brigid's Day.
The tradition holds that they were hung by the door to protect the house from fire and evil. A new cross is made every year and the old one burned to keep fire from the house. Thankfully house fires today are not as common as they once were, so it is not as common to see the cross by the door. Instead many have taken to wearing St Brigid Cross for protection.
