The St Brigid's Cross is hung on February 1st to commemorate St Brigid's day, our female patron saint. The making of a St Brigid cross is a traditional ritual. The original cross was made from rushes and reeds that were pulled apart rather than cut, hence its unusual shape. According to tradition they were hung by the door to protect the house from fire and evil.
A new cross is made every year and the old one burned to keep fire from the house. Although this tradition has changed in Ireland because houses today tend not to burn down with such regularity, the wearing of a St Brigid Cross is still extremely popular and worn by many Irish people.
Beautifully crafted this cross is double sided and is meant to achieve the look of the original cross which had a rough and jagged appearance.The cross has a good solid weight and makes for a great conservation piece.
