In the shadow of Benbulben mountain, within sight of St. Columba’s Church, the final resting place of William Butler Yeats, you will find the spectacular 10th Century, Drumcliffe Cross. Located just 10 mins drive from Sligo town, in the ruins of a monastery founded by Saint Columcille (Columba) in 574 or 575 CE, the sandstone cross stands an imposing 12 ½ or 3.83 m tall.
The cross is decorated with Intricate carvings on every surface. Featuring unusual elements like a lion and camel, there are also scenes from the bible and what is thought to be the only representation of the Virgin Mary and Child on an Irish High Cross.
Our talented silversmiths have taken inspiration from this impressive sandstone carving in our own recreated Drumcliffe cross. Measuring over 1.5 inches high including a polished bale, the intricate illustrations of the original carving have been recreated with minute detail on front and back, all expertly finished. The skill and workmanship are extraordinary.
This double sided, solid, and weighty cross will last a lifetime and can be passed on as a family heirloom. Hallmarked in the assay office at Dublin castle, you can rest assured of the fine quality of the sterling silver. Like the original stone cross it is inspired by, this cross has been built to last and is ideal for fans of Irish culture and history, those with strong faith, or connection to Ireland.
Your cross includes an 18" sterling silver cable chain. If you prefer something longer or chunkier choose from our handpicked selection of sterling silver chains that pair perfectly with this cross.
