The Legend of the Children of Lir

As one of our island's most famous legends, everyone has their own version of the tale. The story goes that King Lir had four beautiful and beloved children with his much-loved wife Aobh; the eldest boy Aodh, a daughter Fionnghuala, and twin boys, Fiachra and Conn.

After Aobh tragically died, Lir married Aoife to give a mother to his children. But Aoife was jealous of Lir's love for his children, and she cursed them, turning them into swans for 900 years! Ever the steadfast father, Lir stayed with his swan children until he grew old and died, leaving his swan children to endure wind and rain together on the lakes of Ireland.

After nine hundred years, Aoife's spell was finally broken. The four siblings changed back into their human form, although much aged, and were baptized before reuniting with their beloved parents in heaven.
