An Inspiring Irish Landscape - The Causeway Coast, Giants and Irish Gold

Written by Ciaran Vipond on Jul 31, 2019 | 0 Comments

Anyone who has visited Northern Ireland has surely stopped to marvel at the Giant’s Causeway and the beautiful Causeway Coast of North Antrim. The striking landscape of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns known today as the Giant’s Causeway was “discovered” in 1692 by Sir Richard Bulkeley. But how did this surreal landscape form? Surely this stoney architecture had to be man made!? And were Giant’s really involved?

Irish Legend

For years, Irish Legend held Fionn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill in Irish) responsible for the "causeway." The story goes that he built it as a bridge to the Isle of Staffa to pick a fight with his rival, a huge giant named Benandonner. Benandonner is said to have partially destroyed this bridge in a terrified retreat back to Scotland after being outsmarted by Fionn and his wife Oonagh, leaving the spectacular landscape we see today.

Ancient Lava

It isn't hard to see how this mythical landscape inspired such a tall tale! But thanks to years of scientific research, we know that this landscape was formed by a force even greater than the mythically strong Fionn McCool. Massive lava flows from volcanic eruptions 50 to 60 million years ago spread across the landscape, cooling and cracking to form the spectacular hexagonal columnar structures we see today.

A Piece of Ireland

Inspired by these wonderful geometric patterns, our Giants Causeway and Carric Finn designs reflect these shapes not in lava but silver and 10K Irish rose gold.

With earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings, these modern Irish Gold designs make for striking pieces that are real conversation starters!

The perfect reminder of a trip to Ireland and the Causeway, they are a small piece of Ireland that you can have for yourself.

These are just a few of our new Irish rose gold designs with several other pieces inspired by the Irish landscape.

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!
