How to Get the Perfect Fit for a Ring

Written by Ciaran Vipond on Sep 10, 2019 | 0 Comments

Getting ring size right is so important and can be a source of some anxiety if you are not able to try the ring on, or if you are buying for a loved one as a gift!

You will find some of our thoughts on ring sizing below that we hope you find helpful. We would be delighted to use our years of experience in working with you to make sure you are happy and confident in your ring selection and get that perfect fit!

Free Ring Sizers

We offer free ring sizers to all of our customers. Just get in touch and within 10 days, your ring sizer will have made it from Dublin, Ireland to you wherever you are in the world. Our easy to use sizers take the guess work out of getting a perfect fit for your ring and are more reliable than online or downloadable sizers that can be much trickier to use!

Our Mulitsizer has a numeric guage to read off your ring size

How to Use Our Ring Sizer

Our ring sizer works like a belt. To be sure of your reading, we recommend measuring 3 or 4 times to make sure you have got exactly the right size. Our sizers work on whole and ½ sizes. If you are in any doubt please don’t hesitate to call or email us and we would be happy to help.

  • Slide one end of the sizer through the open slot to make a ring shape.
  • Feel free to play around with it a bit - they are reusable and they are pretty sturdy so you can move the slider around to get used to it!
  • Slip the sizer onto the finger that the ring will be worn on and see how it feels. If it is too big or small take off the sizer and size it up or down by a 1/2 size.
  • Repeat this process adjusting the sizer until you have a comfortable fit. You want it to feel snug but not tight. The sizer should be able to just slip back over your knuckle.
  • You can then read off the ring size from the small ruler on the side of the sizer - the little black arrow on the sizer will point to the correct size. The person in the image above will need a Size 6 ring.

My Top Tips for Getting the Right Fit

I have been working in the Irish Jewelry trade for over 50 years. Below are some of the things I would work through with customers looking to get the correct size

Stay Away from String and Paper Ring Sizers

Unlike the metal found in a ring, string or paper sizers can stretch or twist quite a bit, yielding an inaccurate measurement. If you are not using our ring sizer make sure the measurement tool you are using sits flat on the finger and doesn't stretch, tear or twist while you are using it.

Make Sure to Measure the Finger that the Ring is Intended for

It sounds pretty simple but our two hands are often slightly different in size and our dominant hand tends to be slightly bigger! So do make sure you are measuring for the left side if it is an engagement ring you are after!

Keep Cool

Our hands get a little bigger in the heat. If it is a hot day or you have just exercised, your hand may be a little bit bigger than it usually is and that can impact on size!

Timing Matters

Your hands also change size depending on the time of day believe it or not! They are smaller in the morning or if you are cold. So I recommend trying to measure towards the end of the day, ideally when your fingers are neither hot nor cold.

Buying a Wide Ring? Bigger is Better

If you are buying a wide band, like our beautiful 10mm Ardagh Chalice Ring, it can be a good idea go for a slightly larger ring size than the measurement you take off the sizer.

With the wider profile these styles can fit a little bit snug. But don't worry! This is something I will take into consideration for any of our customers buying a wider profile ring. I will look after adjusting the sizing accordingly from the measurement you take!

Snug Fit is it for Diamonds

If the ring has a very thin band, or is top-heavy, for example as it might be for a Diamond Solitaire engagement ring, then I often recommend erring on the snug side. But again this is something I can work with you on to make sure you get a perfect fit.

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grĂ¡ for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grĂ¡ continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!
