About This Piece

A spectacular high stone cross stands proudly in County Offaly, on the banks of the river Shannon. The cross measures an imposing 10 ½ feet or 3.2 m tall, set amongst the ruins of Clonmacnoise, one of the oldest early Christian settlements in Europe.

The monastery was founded in around 544 CE by Saint Ciaran and his followers. The “Clonmacnoise cross” or the “The Cross of the Scriptures” as it is commonly known, dates to several hundred years later, around 900 to 920 CE.

Every surface of the cross bears intricate carving in the fine sandstone, sourced over 100 km west of the monastery near the Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare. The panels depict stories from the Bible in illustrated panels. There are also some non-biblical scenes including a warrior. This is thought to be the Abbot Colman or High King Flann Sinna. Together they erected this cross and are credited in an inscription at its base.

The intricate carving of the original cross can be seen inside in the Visitor Center.

The cross was taken inside to protect one of the finest high crosses in Ireland and spectacular work of medieval art for future generations to enjoy. A fabulous replica now stands in the original spot preserving the vista of the monastic site of Clonmacnoise.

From Sandstone to Silver

Our talented silversmiths have taken inspiration from this fine carving in our recreation of the Clonmacnoise cross. Measuring close to 2 inches high including a polished bale, the intricate illustrations have been recreated with minute detail, all expertly finished. The skill and workmanship are extraordinary.

This double sided, solid, and weighty cross will last a lifetime and can be passed on as a family heirloom. Hallmarked in the assay office at Dublin castle, you can rest assured of the fine quality of the sterling silver. I was extremely satisfied with ‘The Cross of Scripture’. Recently, while in Ireland I bought from another Jewler a silver cross which was purported to be a Cross of Scripture. It was clearly not when I examined it on the Wikipedia page. At the time I thought it was a cheap knockoff, not well done. It was while looking at the My Irish Jeweler site that I discovered that the cross I originally bought was the Muiredeach Celtic Cross. Further, the image looks like the exact same cross I originally bought. So, I’m grateful for everything about this Jeweler. As my name is Tom, and it is believed that one of the panels on the Muiredeach Cross is an image of ‘Thomas touching the wounds of Christ, I am doubly thankful.
