These rings feature inscriptions in Ogham (pronounced "Oh-um"), the earliest form of written language in Ireland. The ogham alphabet consists of lines etched into stone or drawn on parchment. Ogham was also carved into tree trunks and many of the letters are named after native Irish tree species. There are more than 180 ogham stones standing in the south and west of Ireland today. The earliest surviving examples date from the 4th century.
