A spectacular high stone cross stands proudly in County Offaly, on the banks of the river Shannon. The cross measures an imposing 10 ½ feet or 3.2 m tall, set amongst the ruins of Clonmacnoise, one of the oldest early Christian settlements in Europe.
The monastery was founded in around 544 CE by Saint Ciaran and his followers. The “Clonmacnoise cross” or the “The Cross of the Scriptures” as it is commonly known, dates to several hundred years later, around 900 to 920 CE.
Every surface of the cross bears intricate carving in the fine sandstone, sourced over 100 km west of the monastery near the Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare. The panels depict stories from the Bible in illustrated panels. There are also some non-biblical scenes including a warrior. This is thought to be the Abbot Colman or High King Flann Sinna. Together they erected this cross and are credited in an inscription at its base.
The intricate carving of the original cross can be seen inside in the Visitor Center.
The cross was taken inside to protect one of the finest high crosses in Ireland and spectacular work of medieval art for future generations to enjoy. A fabulous replica now stands in the original spot preserving the vista of the monastic site of Clonmacnoise.
Our talented goldsmiths have taken inspiration from this fine carving in our own recreation of the Clonmacnoise cross. Measuring close to 2 inches high including a polished bale, the intricate illustrations have been recreated with minute detail, all expertly finished. The skill and workmanship are extraordinary.
This double sided, solid, and weighty cross will last a lifetime and can be passed on as a family heirloom. Hallmarked in the assay office at Dublin castle, you can rest assured of the fine quality of the gold. Like the original carved in stone, this cross has been made to last and is ideal for fans of Irish culture and history, those with strong faith, or connection to Ireland.

I really love my Cross alot. Like the circle in the middle to where I can touch it when I need a little reassurance God is guiding us by the shoulder even when we're not so sure. My Irish Jeweler was great working with me on at least one return and two changed orders to ensure I loved the final result. Thanks Gemma & Vicki, & God bless.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the truly beautiful Celtic Cross you made for me in your workshop. I am very very happy with it. I visited Ireland in 1975 and I believe that I actually photographed the very cross itself. I have been looking through an old album and found the picture a few days ago.Thank you also for the St. Patrick's Day greeting just received today.Sincerely John Blankley
