Learn how to say: What is seldom is wonderful (Gaelic)

Written by Ciaran Vipond on Aug 11, 2022 | 5 Comments

Is there anything more beautiful than that rare creature, the bright & warm Irish summer's day? I'm reminded of my favorite Irish saying: "An rud is annamh is iontach".

The entire island has spent the last week basking in wonderful sunshine. We have had several disappointing “summers” in recent years, so we are all flocking to the beach to treasure this gift.

We are certainly “making hay as the sun shines” and I am reminded of my favorite Irish proverb, “An rud is annamh is iontach”. This translates as “what is seldom is wonderful”. It is such a fine sentiment and a great reminder not to let these fleeting moments escape us.

You can hear my recording of the phrase below. Perhaps you can say it to a family member at your next overdue reunion? Or to a special person in your life the next time you share a wonderful experience?

Thanks to Kris Clarkin for the incredible photograph of Dalkey in the sunshine!

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!

Just wanted to say thank you for the Gaelic quote ... it's true "what is rare is wonderful". I don't know if there's a Gaelic quote for the saying "Life is what you make of it", but I would love to hear that said in Gaelic as well ...

Have a wonderful week!
