Stories from our Customers: Andrew & Liana

Written by Liz Maguire on Sep. 14, 2021 | 0 Comments

We have a soft spot for love stories here at My Irish Jeweler. So when Andrew got in touch about his beautiful proposal to his partner Liana, we just had to ask for the full story! Thanks to Andrew for humoring us and sharing a chapter of their wonderful love story with us.

How did you meet?

Andrew: “April 25, 2019, my friend’s early afternoon texts keep coming fiercely as I try to work. “Come here. There is someone you have to meet.” "I am preparing for an evening hearing" (I am a lawyer on Cape Cod) "and don’t really have the time." She is insistent, and seeing as she is in the building next door, I gather that this is not going to end until I relent and take a short break.

She and her husband want to introduce me to a woman. The one-year anniversary of my wife’s death (from cancer) is in five days. My friends promised her that they would look out for me. I delayed thirty more minutes. The texts kept coming. I finally went over.

As I entered their glass studio, a striking Chinese woman (a retired lawyer) swings around on her stool to look at me and smiles. This was her first time visiting her new friends by herself. They told her about me that afternoon and of my interest and background in Chinese culture, and she wanted to meet. I learn later that I did something that instantly endeared me to her. I blushed. Beet red. I think it is embarrassing. They all found it cute and adorable.

My friends suggested that Liana accompany me to my hearing that night, and I said yes. The stars had aligned, and the rest is magical history.”

How did you propose?

Andrew: “August 1, 2021, Liana has returned from her most recent trip to China, and we are at home on Cape Cod. We have both felt deeply for a long time that we are soul mates, and I have secretly come up with a plan to propose to her.

Two weeks after we had met in 2019, we went with my brother to climb Highland Lighthouse and watch the sunset. He took photographs. It was that evening that I felt my heart reawaken as I held Liana’s hand walking the grounds atop the cliff high above the Atlantic Ocean. I want to propose at Highland Light, but unfortunately it is closed for renovations.

Not far away are the Three Sisters Lighthouses. These simple, wooden lighthouses are long since decommissioned and set in a small glade surrounded by the woods of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The lighthouse that replaced them lies one-quarter mile to the east also high atop a cliff looking over the Atlantic Ocean.

I enlist my brother in my plans as photographer. Liana has no idea what is about to happen. We drive out to Eastham and begin walking among the Three Sisters on a picture-perfect and comfortable, late summer afternoon. After positioning my brother and lining up in front of one of the lighthouses, I pulled out my My Irish Jeweler box and asked Liana to marry me. She said yes!”

Why did you choose an Irish design?

Andrew: “Three weeks after we met in 2019, I left for my first-ever trip to Ireland, a small group tour. It was during this trip that my life reawakened. I bought Liana a Claddagh pendant in a tourist shop in Galway. I gave it to her when I returned, right before she left for a visit back to China, and she began wearing it every day. Ireland is thus intimately connected to our relationship, almost back to the very beginning. When I decided to propose, I knew an Irish pendant was what I wanted. The Trinity Knots and Circle of Life with a center emerald (Liana’s birthstone) on the pendant I selected are perfect, and Liana agrees.”

Any Wedding Plans?

Andrew: “Given Covid-19, our respective children’s college graduation schedules, and families spread halfway across the globe, we have not made wedding plans yet.”

Comhghairdeas!

Congratulations or Comhghairdeas to Andrew and Liana! We were delighted to help Andrew find that perfect piece to propose with real meaning for them. May they have a wonderful celebration in the future that matches their energy and light. Slainte!

My Irish Jeweler

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thanks to my Irish born father I was lucky enough to regularly visit Ireland -- and receive visitors from Ireland often, to my childhood home. This blending of cultures triggered my interest in Irish art and culture. My love for jewelry was nurtured by my American mom who is an artisan jeweler and dealer. I grew up loving Ireland and jewelry!

Now I happily reside in Dublin, having read Irish Literature and History at Trinity College Dublin. Having a passion for Irish literature, I am particularly interested in the work of poet W.B. Yeats. With the Celtic Revival in the 20th century, Yeats and his contemporaries did much for Irish arts and history. Many of our beautiful pieces at My Irish Jeweler are inspired by the myths and legends, as well as artwork, which gained permanence in Irish heritage as a result of the Celtic Revival.

I look forward to sharing the history and stories which influence the inspiration for our pieces with the My Irish Jeweler readers.
