Ardagh Chalice

The Ardagh Chalice is an 8th Century Celtic relic which features numerous unique design details. In 1868 the Chalice was discovered in a Limerick Potato field by two farmers. Our Celtic Warrior range is our contemporary interpretation of the traditional Celtic artistry of the Ardagh Chalice.

Specifics of the Chalice

Only 7 inches tall, with 48 different designs made from 354 individual pieces and 9 materials including precious gold. The ancient Celts were not primative people; instead, they were deeply connected to nature and mythology. Much of their art reflects this respect for the natural world, with animal and plant imagery easily identifiable. This Chalice is revered as a fine example of ancient Celtic metalwork. One of the most unique ever discovered, in fact.

A History of Celtic Design

In the time of its creation, the Ardagh Chalice was almost certainly a symbolic piece for its tribe. Scholars are confident that pieces like the Ardagh Chalice would have been used in religious or political ceremonies. For instance, it was likely buried either during a religious ceremony or during a treaty process. While we’ll never know exactly why or how the chalice was used in Celtic life, we are lucky to have it to study today.

Continuing the Tradition

While the Chalice dates to the 8th Century, it has influenced contemporary art and heritage ever since its discovery. Two modern interpretations of the chalice can be seen each September in Croke Park, when the winners of the All-Ireland football and camogie finals hoist the Sam Maguire and the O'Duffy Cup. Interested in having your own piece of history? Our Celtic Warrior range is inspired by the Ardagh Chalice and makes an ideal gift. Timeless and thoughtful, consider a Celtic Warrior piece for the person in your life who’s strength and beauty you admire.
