Birthstone

Throughout history gemstones have been associated with particular traditions. Diamonds for engagements became popular after World War II, while an Emerald or Ruby for an anniversary dates back to Medieval times! Over the years the traditions and reasons for gifting gemstones have changed, but one tradition has been pretty consistent.

History of the Birthstone

A birthstone is the gemstone which is coordinated with a month in the Gregorian calendar. The tradition as we know it today is thought to have started in Poland or Germany, though it is widely accepted worldwide now.

Historians can trace reference to the western tradition of birthstones back to the Bible. In Eastern culture, gemstones have long been associated with the zodiac and astrology. During the Middle Ages, eastern and western traditions melded.

But it was only in the 20th Century that the Jewelers of America and the British National Association of Geologists formalized their lists for birthstone designation.

There are still differences to this day and people tend to pick freely from both lists, picking the stones that appeal to them or that work best for their budget or needs.
