Trinity Knot

The Trinity Knot is one of the most famous types of Celtic Knot-work, all of which are interwoven with Irish cultural legacy. For over 1500 years intricate knot-work has defined Irish art and metalwork. Knots adorn pages of ancient manuscripts such as the 8th Century Book of Kells, are engraved on stone crosses that still stand a millennium later, and they elevate stunning ancient treasures like the Ardagh Chalice.

Intricate Design

The Trinity Knot has a beautiful form with three interlinked leaf-like shapes giving a triangular profile. From these relatively simple shapes a seemingly complex trefoil knot is formed, a knot which cannot be untied. Some designs also include a circle at the center of this knot.

Origin And Meaning

The early precursors to Celtic Knots were spirals, plaits, braids, step and key patterns made in 450 AD by Celts. Richly depicting people, animals, and plants these symbols evolved into true Celtic Knots, those with no beginning or end, by the 7th Century.

Their exact meaning has been lost in the mists of time but several interpretations suggest the Trinity Knot represents the Christian Holy Trinity when displayed on its own, as it is in several ancient stone monuments still standing in Ireland.

The Trinity Knot may draw on the Celtic significance of the three domains of earth, sea and sky. There is also a possible link to lunar and solar phases as a number of Trinity Knot symbols have been found alongside Celtic era solar and lunar symbols.

Continuing Tradition

We feature Trinity Knots in our jewelry design to continue this wonderful tradition of craftsmanship and share this iconic and versatile symbol with our customers worldwide.
