A spectacular cross stands proudly in County Louth, measuring an imposing 19 feet or 5.8 m in height amongst the ruined monastic site of Monasterboice. Made in between 900 and 920 CE, this high stone cross is believed to be the most impressive surviving example of early medieval Irish stonework. Every surface of the sandstone bears intricate carving, including Illustrated panels depicting iconic stories from the Bible. Some say it is Ireland's greatest contribution to European sculpture and is under consideration to become an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cross gets its name from an inscription at its base "ÓR DO MUIREDACH LAS NDERNAD IN CHROS", which translates from Gaelic as "a prayer for Muiredach who had this cross made".
Just like the cross it is modeled on, our yellow gold Muiredach cross is imposing, measuring over 1.5 inches high including the bale. Inspired by the skilled work if the stonemasons who carved the original cross, our goldsmiths have recreated the intricate illustrations with minute detail that has been expertly finished. The skill and workmanship is extraordinary.
This solid and weighty cross will last a lifetime and can be passed on as an heirloom. Hallmarked in the assay office at Dublin castle, you can rest assured the fine quality of the 10K or 14K yellow gold. Like the original stone cross it is inspired by, this yellow gold celtic cross has been built to last.
An ideal cross for fans of Irish culture and history, those with strong faith, or connection to our lovely island.
Choose from warm 10K yellow gold or rich 14K yellow gold. Love the design but prefer the cooler tone of white gold? Check out our Muiredach Celtic Cross in 10K or 14K white gold.
