Traditionally handmade, these crosses are woven from rushes or reeds the night before and hung by the door to protect the house and all those in it. A new cross was made each year and the old one burned to keep fire from the door. Thankfully fires are not as common these days. But many today have taken to wearing St Brigid Cross for protection.
