About This Piece

St. Mobhi is a familiar name to many here in Dublin. This early Irish saint is credited with founding a large monastery in Glasnevin in North Dublin in the 6th century and was the teacher of many of Ireland’s more well known saints including St. Columcille/Columba and St. Ciarán.

Though his monastery is sadly long gone, roads, schools and churches in Glasnevin still bear his name. Part of Glasnevin cemetery, final resting place of historic figures including Daniel O’Connell and Micheal Collins, also bear the name St. Mobhi. The imposing and ornate 19th century Celtic crosses found there were the inspiration for this beautiful sterling silver necklace.

The shaft, arms and head of this lovely Celtic cross have all been painstakingly hand engraved by master silversmith, Aidan Breen. With Trinity knots in the arms representing eternity and beautiful Celtic interlace, this stunning cross merges the best of Christian and Celtic art for a piece that is truly unique.

Measuring over 1.5 inches high including a polished bale, this solid Sterling silver cross emulates the imposing and elegant form of 19th Century stone crosses in St. Mobhis plot in Glasnevin. We were so pleased with the necklace that we bought for our daughter. She had a miscarriage in December of last year and the engraving on the necklace was the meaning of the name that her and her husband had chosen for the precious baby girl.
