Twelve Days of Irish Words and Phrases: More Season's Greetings
Written by Ciaran on Dec 12, 2024 | 0 Comments
Welcome to the last day of our Twelve Days of Irish Christmas. Inspired by that traditional carol and the funny Irish version, Christmas Countdown, we're bringing you Twelve Days of Irish Christmas (Words).
We are finishing our 12 days of Irish Christmas (words) just as we started—with season's greetings! Find the Irish for Happy Solstice, Hanukkah, and New Year below.
Long before Christmas was celebrated in Ireland, the Winter Solstice marked the middle of winter. If you would like to wish someone a Happy Solstice on December 21st this year, you could say Grianstad Sona Duit (GREE-un-stad SUN-uh ditch). The word grianstad in Irish means "sun stop."
The spectacular sight of sunlight "stopping" in the 5000 year old chamber of Newgrange on the Solstice.
Of course, at this time of year, it is not just Christmas or the Solstice. Many cultures and religions mark important holidays in December.
For someone celebrating Hanukkah, you could say Hanukkah Sona Duit/Daoibh (Hanukah SUN-uh Ditch/DEE-iv). Alternatively, you could choose Bíodh Féile na Soilse íontach agat (Bee-ah fay-la na sil-sha een-tuck agut), or have a wonderful festival of lights!
A little later in the season, you might want to send good wishes for the turning of the year, in which case you would say Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit - wishing a prosperous New Year to one person. If you want to say the same to two or more people, you should say Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh.
You may also want to use the more general-purpose greetings like “Happy Holidays" or “Blessing of the Season” that we shared on Day 1.
What's Next?
This is our last day of Irish Christmas words and phrases. If you missed one of the 12 days you can find all of them here. And, of course, there is also Day 12 in our Twelve Days of Christmas offers! These offers will run until our last order date for guaranteed delivery on December 18th - so all that remains to say is Happy Christmas - Nollaig Shona!

My Irish Jeweler
Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!
I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!
