Tree of Life
The Tree of Life, or the Crann Bethadh (pronounced: Crown Ba-ha), was revered by the ancient Irish. They placed immense value in the food, shelter, and materials that trees provided. Often settlements would have a special sacred tree at their centre where important ceremonies were held and decisions could be made.
Divine Connection
For the Celts, trees were doorways, living connections to the gods, spirits and ancestors. The branches reached up to the gods, the trunk and roots grounded in the earth connected humanity with spirits below. The word door might even derive from dair, the Celtic word for oak.
Legendary Trees
Irish legends have tales of sacred trees being able to confer blessings on people in need. Even today, on a drive through the Irish countryside you might see a tree adorned with ribbons, medals and messages from people looking for knowledge, love, health, or prosperity.
