Tucked away in the ruins of an old churchyard near the centre of the small town of Duleek, in Co. Meath is a beautifully carved Celtic high stone cross. Smaller than many of its kind, standing just 6 feet or 1.82 m tall, this cross really packs a punch with intricate carvings on every surface.
The cross dates to the 9th or 10th century, but it is found in ruins of a monastery that can be traced all the way back before 489 CE and St. Patrick himself, together with his disciple Saint Cianan.
The west side of the sandstone cross bears intricate carving depicting stories from the Bible, including the early life of the virgin Mary. The intricate carvings of the east side of the cross comprise spectacular spiral and knot designs with what some believe is an early astronomical representation of the sun and orbiting planets!
Our talented silversmiths have taken inspiration from this astonishing sandstone carving in our own recreated Duleek cross. Measuring close over one inch high including a polished bale, the intricate illustrations of the original carving have been recreated with minute detail on both sides of the cross, all expertly finished. The skill and workmanship are extraordinary.
This double sided, solid, and weighty cross will last a lifetime and can be passed on as a family heirloom. Hallmarked in the assay office at Dublin castle, you can rest assured of the fine quality of the sterling silver. Like the original stone cross it is inspired by, this cross has been built to last and is ideal for fans of Irish culture and history, those with strong faith, or connection to Ireland.
Your cross includes an 18" sterling silver cable chain. If you prefer something longer or chunkier choose from our handpicked selection of sterling silver chains that pair perfectly with this cross.
