We're well into Communion and Confirmation season here in Ireland, which got us chatting here at My Irish Jeweler about special gifts we received as kids to mark important rites of passage. Each one of us can remember receiving a special piece of jewellery as a child to mark religious ceremonies like Communions or Confirmations, as well as big birthdays or graduations.
Communions and Confirmations are everywhere in Ireland each spring, with the vast majority of young people participating in these coming-of-age ceremonies. It is a common tradition here in Ireland to give the young person a gift to mark the day, a keepsake to reflect on in years to come. Fine jewellery has always been a traditional gift, as a well-crafted piece will last a lifetime.
Communions are still one of the big celebrations in Irish family life, and many Irish children will receive their first piece of fine jewellery as a keepsake of the day. I still have a small sterling silver cross given to me by my grandmother, and that was quite some time ago!
