This Mothers day, Lá Fhéile an Mháthair, why not impress her with some Irish greetings? Lá na Máithreacha Sona duit, pronounced “Law na Maw-her-aka Sun-a ditch” - Happy Mother’s Day!
Let me take you through how to say this phrase in the lovely Irish language.
Mother's Day in Ireland usually falls on a Sunday towards the end of March - the 4th Sunday of lent. This year Mother's Day in Ireland and the UK is Sunday March 30th. A little later than usual!
But Mother's Day is a popular tradition celebrated at different times around the globe - Canada, Australia, NZ, USA and many parts of Europe celebrate Mothers on Sunday, May 11th this year.
The love and gratitude we have for our mothers and grandmothers is something felt every day. But it's no surprise that setting aside a special day has caught on worldwide. Mother's Day gives us a chance to express that love and gratitude, letting her know she is appreciated and showering her with cárta, bláthanna, agus bronntanas (cards, flowers, and gifts).
And of course we are here to help if you would like to give your mother a special Irish gift to match your Gaelic Mother's Day greetings! Our Birthstone, Tree of life, and Celtic Warrior collections are all customer favorites for Mother's Day gifts that she will treasure forever.
There is a beautiful Irish symbol for everyone - whether she is a new mother, someone who proudly dotes on her children or grandchildren, a pillar of the family, or a modern day Warrior Queen.
Some of our most popular gift choices for Mother’s Day are our Birthstone pieces. A birthstone piendant, ring, or earrings, set with a stone marking the new arrival is a perfect fit for someone on their first Mother’s day.
Many of our birthstone pieces incorporate Irish designs like the Trinity Knot or the Claddagh. The eternal love of the Trinity Knot or the heart, hands, and crown of the Claddagh are a perfect symbols of maternal love, captured eloquently in this old Irish proverb -
“Gods most precious work of art is the warmth and love of a Mother’s heart.”
And for a doting Mother or Grandmother, we have several birthstone designs that can be personalized with gems for all her children or grandchildren. Wearing a birthstone piece, she can keep her cherished family members close to her heart.
James Joyce somewhat crudely commented on maternal love when he wrote -
“Whatever else is unsure in this stinking dunghill of a world, a mother's love is not.”
A similar sentiment of constance, strength, shelter an connection is conveyed by our Celtic Tree of Life jewelry, if in a more refined manner than the bluntness of Joyce! The beautiful symbolism of the Celtic Tree of Life makes them a popular gift choice for mom.
For a mother who is strong, brave and always there to support her family, a piece from our Celtic Warrior collection will remind her how important she really is.
These pieces will make her feel she can take on the world when she wears them. And with rings, earrings, pendants and crosses and more to choose from in our Celtic Warrior range there is sure to be something that suits her style.
All of our jewelry comes packaged in lovely gift boxes with a booklet detailing the symbolism and history of our designs.
To any Mothers reading this we wish you Lá an Mháthair faoi shona dhuit, A happy Mother’s Day!

My Irish Jeweler
Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!
I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!

Oh, I'll try to say this to my mum but I'm going to botch it pretty badly, I think!
