Getting Engaged? Unique Proposal Ideas for Something Different

Written by Ciaran Vipond on Oct 03, 2022 | 0 Comments

So you want to pop the question? But perhaps you are not sure about picking THE ring. Or you are not even sure if you should propose with a ring? Should there be diamonds? So many questions!

Yes diamond engagement rings are lovely, but they are not for everyone. Below are a few ideas that might help you with your own unique proposal, particularly if you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

A few of the Couples we have been honoured to work with

With more than 50 years of experience in the jewellery business, we’ve helped quite a few love birds make it official.

We are here to help take some of the stress out of all jewlery related decisions around your engagement, so you can focus on what is really important… each other!

You Don’t Have to Do it with Diamonds:

First off, if you are not sure that a diamond ring is the thing for your loved one, you might be surprised to learn that diamonds engagement rings are a recent enough development! Although many would consider diamonds synonymous with engagements and weddings, — they were not a typical choice until Hollywood popularized them the 1950s!

And although diamond rings are still a very popular choice for engagements, there are plenty of other jewellery options out there for those looking to pop the question.

Say it with a Hand Engraving

Instead of "saying it with Diamonds" you might consider engraving your proposal on a carefully selected piece of jewellery? As an added bonus, in our experience this technique has a 100% success rate! All you need do is select a piece of jewellery you know they’ll love, and have those four important words engraved for them to discover when they open the gift box.

One of our customers asked his now wife to marry him with an engraved Celtic Warrior Bangle at Christmas. He went so far as to disguise the jewellery in a plumbing parts box! Needless to say she was very surprised when she opened it! But after she got over the shock, we were delighted to hear that he got the answer he was hoping for, along with a great story to tell!

If you would like to follow in this brave gentleman's footsteps with your own engraved proposal, you can find out more about engraving here.

Give Your Heart to Your Soul Mate

Or you may want to take saying it from the heart literally. Another of our customers got in touch to ask for our Mo Anam Cara (My Soul Mate) heart shaped pendant to be engraved with a personal proposal on the back. This touching gesture made the most of a wonderful Irish sentiment.

And the happy couple were so taken with his ancient Celtic idea of a soul mate, that they went on to select matching Mo Anam Cara wedding bands for them both to wear at their ceremony.

An Irish Promise of Love, Loyalty, and Friendship

And speaking of Irish sentiment and rings, you can never go wrong with a romantic Claddagh. They have been used in Ireland for 100’s of years as a promise ring to make intentions to marry known. And the beautiful sentiment in the design of a Claddagh means they are still a perfect piece to propose with today.

We have Claddagh rings for Him, Claddagh rings for Her, with or without gemstones and designs in silver, gold, rose gold and platinum to suit all tastes and budgets.

The classic elegance of a sterling silver Claddagh set with Connemara Marble might be the one for you.

Or a timeless golden Claddagh like these beautiful 14K rings, symbols of your love that will last a lifetime.

Celtic Love Knot

We've also helped customers propose with a much older Irish symbol of love, the Trinity Knot or the Celtic Love knot as it is known by many. Perfect symbolism for asking someone to "tie the knot" and spend a lifetime together.

We were delighted to hear back from Andrew about his proposal. He asked his girlfriend to marry him on a sunny Sunday afternoon on a walk by the lovely Three Sisters Lighthouses in Massachusetts and chose our Emerald & Diamond Trinity Knot Pendant to mark the momentous event. The lucky lady was surprised and delighted and said Yes! You can read about their light filled love story here

If you would like to follow Andrews lead and propose with your own Celtic Love knot, we have expertly crafted Celtic Knot jewellery including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings to suit every taste and budget.

More than Diamonds...

You needn't have a Hollywood budget to get a dazzling ring for your loved one’s fair hand is sparkle is what they have their heart set on. You can show them they are the brightest star in your life with with a ring that impresses everywhere it goes.

We have sapphire, ruby and emerald rings available in a range of metals that are simply breathtaking and sure to bring a twinkle or even tears of joy to the eye of the lucky person to be presented with one!

Sapphire, Ruby and emerald Engagement rings

Liz picked out our Sapphire Halo Ring together with her longtime love Sam after they decided to get married while washing the dishes one spring evening in 2021.

You can read a little about their charming and unconventional love story here. We think you will agree that the three of them look stunning in blue!

Still have more questions?

If in the end you do decide to pop the question with a ring, you may have questions about ring sizing like what is the average ring size for men and women or how to secretly size a ring for your loved one if you don’t already know their size.

We are also here to use all our years of experience to help you with sizing and selection, making sure everything is perfect so you are free to enjoy such a momentous event. So please do get in touch or book a private video consultation and we would be delighted to help.

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!
