How To Take an Engagement Ring Photo

Written by Liz Maguire on Mar 02, 2021 | 0 Comments

Congratulations on your Engagement! It is such an exciting time and we are sure you can’t wait to share the perfect ring shot with your nearest and dearest.

We have plenty of experience of photographing beautiful Engagement Rings. We know getting the perfect shot can be tricky! We collected our photographer Ruth's tips and tricks for the three most important things to get right for a good photo -

  1. The set up
  2. The styling
  3. The shoot

Read on to find out how to get the perfect shot of your Engagement Ring!

The Set Up for the Perfect Shot

As with many things in life, preparation is the key to success in photography too! The perfect Engagement Ring shot will be in the can if you:

  • Clean the ring - Fingerprints or smudges on the band could ruin an otherwise perfect photo. A light polish with a soft cloth should do the trick and ensure your ring is at its best for the shot.
  • Make sure your nails are neat and clean - This special occasion sounds like a good excuse to treat yourself to a manicure. But if that isn’t possible, not to worry! You can always crop your nails out of the shot or turn them away from the lens.

    Styling the Perfect Shot

    • Consider your background - Take the opportunity to add a bit more colour and context to your engagement shot! Bonus points for incorporating something relevant to you and your new fiancé.
    • Find a prop - if the sight of a camera makes you freeze, a prop might help you to get a more natural look. We find holding a glass, or a cup of tea for a cozy shot works a treat. Plus you have a drink for after you get your shot - Win win!

      Snapping the Perfect Shot

Speaking from experience - don’t expect to get the perfect shot first time. This may take a while and it might be easy to be a bit disheartened if your first few attempts don’t look great... But you are sure to get a snap you are delighted with if you:

      • Get the lighting right - We recommend avoiding a flash. It will wash out the image and all that lovely detail wont be visible. Outdoor shots work very well. But if you’re not out in the daylight try standing near a window for some lovely natural light.
      • Try to Relax and have fun with it - a stiff hand can look a little strange in photos. Have a laugh and remember you are celebrating one of the happiest moments of your life.
      • Avoid zooming - Chances are, you will be taking your photos on your phone. For a more crisp shot, avoid using the zoom function and keep your hand as steady as you can. Move the phone closer to the ring if you want a shot that catches all the lovely detail of your ring. Zooming will give you grainy/blurry shots. No one wants that!
      • Get help - We all love selfies, but unless you are a pro, chances are it will be easier to get someone else to take a snap of you instead. Enlist help - a friend or your new Fiancé if they are not going to be in the shot.
      • See that sparkle - If your new ring has a sparkly diamond or gemstone, you might like to do a boomerang rather than a still image. This will allow you to move the ring and show off its sparkle!

      A final Tip

      Try, try, try, again

An effortless engagement ring photo might be anything but effortless! There can be quite a bit of work involved. Do take as many photos as you like to make sure you have lots of options to pick from - but be sure to only upload one!

Just like your love, the perfect engagement ring shot is the only one for you.

      My Irish Jeweler

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thanks to my Irish born father I was lucky enough to regularly visit Ireland -- and receive visitors from Ireland often, to my childhood home. This blending of cultures triggered my interest in Irish art and culture. My love for jewelry was nurtured by my American mom who is an artisan jeweler and dealer. I grew up loving Ireland and jewelry!

Now I happily reside in Dublin, having read Irish Literature and History at Trinity College Dublin. Having a passion for Irish literature, I am particularly interested in the work of poet W.B. Yeats. With the Celtic Revival in the 20th century, Yeats and his contemporaries did much for Irish arts and history. Many of our beautiful pieces at My Irish Jeweler are inspired by the myths and legends, as well as artwork, which gained permanence in Irish heritage as a result of the Celtic Revival.

I look forward to sharing the history and stories which influence the inspiration for our pieces with the My Irish Jeweler readers.
