What is Palladium?

Written by Ciaran Vipond on Mar 29, 2022 | 0 Comments

Palladium is a rare metal in the same group as platinum, sharing many of the same properties including a lovely silvery white colour.

Palladium has been used in making white gold alloys since the early 20th century, however it has more recently become a popular choice, especially for wedding bands, owing to many wonderful features including colour, durability, and resistance to tarnishing.

Why choose Palladium for jewellery?

Palladium isn't heavy handed

Although it looks very similar to platinum, palladium is less dense, giving it a much lighter feel when worn as jewellery. Palladium is an excellent metal choice for someone looking for that white or silvery colour of platinum but doesn’t fancy weight in a piece of jewellery.

Palladium is a budget conscious choice

Palladium comes in at a slightly lower price point than platinum making it a more affordable option.

Palladium is tough

Just like its close relative platinum, palladium is a durable and tarnish resistant metal that stands up well to everyday wear making it an ideal choice for wedding bands or other heirloom pieces of jewellery.

Palladium looks great

Palladium may be tough but as a natural silver metal it does not require any plating and will look good despite the wear and tear of daily life. A good choice for someone that doesn't fancy much maintenance but still wants their jewellery to look good!

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!
