Irish Gold

At the National Museum of Ireland there are nearly 500 pieces of Bronze age gold work on display.

It was long believed by scholars that the gold for these pieces was sourced elsewhere and imported to Ireland. However, gold deposits discovered around Ireland have challenged this belief.

Many of the pieces are the National Museum were possibly mined from the rivers and streams in the South East and North West of Ireland.

How It Is Used

Historically, the gold was used by ancient Irish artisans to craft both symbolic as well as practical items. These items included gold jewellery, such as necklaces, bracelets, cloak pinks, brooches and rings. One of these styles of Celtic jewellery is known as the “torc”, an open bangle ornately decorated with Celtic elements. Scholars believe that a number of different stones and metals were incorporated into Irish design as a direct result of trade.

Irish Gold Today

Mining for gold in Ireland gained popularity in the 19th Century. It was not until recently that mines in Ireland began producing at a similar volume to the “rushes” of the 1700 and 1800s.

In County Tyrone, sediments dating back nearly 540 million years have been transformed to veins of minerals -- including gold.

Whether you're choosing a piece to mark a birthday, engagement or otherwise special anniversary, Irish gold is a quality choice.
