St Christopher

Who was St. Christopher?

Though Saints Patrick, Brigid and Colmcille are the Patrons of Ireland, St. Christopher is held in high regard here too. Known to many as the Patron Saint of travellers and soldiers, representing protection and safety, St Christopher is an enduringly popular saint worldwide to this day.

The history of the saint is hazy, with first mention of him coming from Asia Minor in the 5th century. The most famous story associated with the saint sees him helping a child across a raging river. Lifting the child onto his back, the saint is surprised by the weight, but manages to make it to the other side of the river safety. The child is then revealed to be Christ and the weight was that of the whole world!

What is a St. Christopher medal?

Medals are small, crafted pieces, usually made of a disc of metal that bears an often intricate design. They were typically made to be worn suspended on a piece of jewelry like a chain to form a necklace or on a pin or ribbon.

Those who choose to call upon the symbolism of St. Christopher’s safe deliverance often do so with a medallion or medal depicting the saint carrying a child safely across a river on his shoulder, staff in hand.

These medals have a long association with the protection and safety of those far from home. With stories of his bravery and heroic efforts to help people pass safely through danger, medals with St Christophers image were often worn by sailors, soldiers, and mariners for protection. This token has traditionally been gifted to those in the Armed Forces and those embarking on long journeys or a new adventure. Many Irish people won't leave home without one! It is an empowering symbol, a token to remember the warmth and comfort of home, and a reassuring presence.

St. Christopher and Ireland

As a culturally Catholic country, many saints are held in high regard in Ireland. St. Christopher does seem to hold a special significance for the Irish however, perhaps due to the necessity for emigration overseas throughout Ireland's troubled history?

Ireland is also a place where symbols and stories carry real weight, so these medals are not just jewelry; they are a small but mighty link between generations. And while plenty of people wear them for their religious meaning, just as many wear them for the comfort or reassurance they bring. In a world full of change, there’s something lovely about holding onto a bit of tradition that’s always been there, quietly offering protection with a bit of Irish charm.
