Who was St. Christopher?
Though Saints Patrick, Brigid and Colmcille are the Patrons of Ireland, St. Christopher is held in high regard here and around the world. Known to many as the Patron Saint of travelers and soldiers, representing protection and safety, St Christopher is an enduringly popular saint worldwide to this day.
With stories of his bravery and heroic efforts to help people pass safely through danger, medals with St Christophers image were often worn by sailors, soldiers, and mariners for protection. The most famous story associated with the saint sees him helping a child across a raging river. Lifting the child onto his back, the saint is surprised by the weight, but manages to make it to the other side of the river safety. The child is then revealed to be Christ and the weight was that of the whole world.
