Bring Ireland "HOME"

Written by Ciaran on Jan. 15, 2021 | 2 Comments

We believe home is one of the most important things in life. So important, that we made it our logo! Those funny lines to the left of "My Irish Jeweler" spell out the word HOME in Ogham, the ancient Irish tree alphabet. It also inspired the title of our regular newsletter, "Notes from Home" written by the very talented Vicky, as well as a special sterling silver range of our best selling Irish jewelry.

Read on to find out why home has always held a special place in Ireland, and how that inspired our HOME range which features the Trinity Knot, Celtic Cross, Shamrock, and other iconic Irish symbols.

What does HOME mean in Ireland?

Home and family are closely linked in Ireland. Family meant everything in Ireland, back to the days of the ancient Celts. And from those ancient times to this, Irish homes have served as important gathering places and the heart of Irish life.

In the Irish cottage, the hearth or fireplace of the home was at the heart of family. Naturally all the cooking, and many jobs like mending and clothes drying were done here. But as it was also the main source of light and warmth, it was also a place for storytelling, singing, and celebrating.

The inspiration for our HOME Range.

This connection to Home is what many Irish immigrants took with them when they travelled overseas in search of opportunity. Home crops up regularly in songs and stories about the Irish diaspora. And it was this idea of connection that inspired the design of our Home Range, pieces to keep Ireland near to the heart wherever you are.

Celebrate HOME Wherever You Are

Each piece of our handmade Celtic Jewelry is carefully crafted in Ireland and shipped worldwide. What makes these “HOME” pieces special is a subtle detail. On the reverse of these necklaces, you will find a small ogham engraving that reads “HOME.” Crafted in heavyweight sterling silver, each piece features iconic Irish symbols or a connection to that idea of "Home".

St. Christopher Medal

For those that find themselves far from home, our Sterling Silver Celtic St. Christopher Medal continues a tradition long held in Ireland. The patron saint of travellers, representing protection and safety, St Christopher is an enduringly popular saint worldwide to this day, and especially in Ireland.

With stories of his heroic efforts to help people pass safely through danger, medals with St Christophers image were often worn by sailors, soldiers, and mariners for protection. Celtic braiding frames this meaningful gift, with the wording ‘Saint Christopher Protect Us’ beautifully depicted.

The Celtic Cross

Iconic and ancient Celtic Crosses still dot the landscape across Ireland, making this an instantly recognizable symbol of our lovely island worldwide. Our Sterling Silver Heavy Oxidized Celtic Cross is a thoughtful symbol to wear or share as a gift. Perfect as a memento of Irish roots, faith, or family, this cross is especially popular to commemorate travels, or a promise of a trip yet to come.

The base and arms of the Cross feature intricate Trinity Knot detailing. An "oxidized" finish gives the cross a lovely antique feel or an ‘Old World’ charm. Like the warmth of gold? This cross is also available in a Two-Tone design that draws the eye with the classic combination of Sterling Silver and Gold. Engrave a name or date on the reverse side of either of these heavyweight heirlooms to make a truly one-of-a-kind heirloom.

The Celtic Knot

Celtic Knots and knot-work are very important in the Irish cultural legacy. For over 1500 years, the Celtic Knot has defined Irish art and metalwork. Celtic Knots decorate historic artifacts like the Book of Kells or the Ardagh Chalice. The Celtic Knot tells the story of Ireland and connection.

Our magnificent Sterling Silver Oxidized Heavy Celtic Braid Ingot is a customer favorite. A double Celtic braid is lightly oxidized to accentuate and enhance the intricacy of the pattern. This handsome necklace has a very flattering and easy to wear ingot shape. A popular choice of gift for the recent grad, new son-in-law, boyfriend or husband on your shopping list. Engrave this piece with a significant date or set of initials to add that special touch they’ll treasure.

The Trinity Knot

Many choose to gift and wear Trinity Knot Jewelry for its long-held symbolism. Emblematic of eternity, connection and unity, a piece of jewelry or art decorated with a Trinity Knot is a powerful token.

Eye catching Celtic braiding stands out beautifully against the oxidized background of this Sterling Silver Large Oxidized Trinity Knot Necklace. One of the oldest and most recognizable Celtic symbols, three leaves come together to form a beautiful representation of an unbreakable bond. In this representation, a polished Sterling Silver circle has been added as a gesture to the cycle of life.

A slightly different style, this Sterling Silver Five Trinity Knot Necklace beautifully honors the rich history and symbolism of the Trinity Knot with a modern flourish. Softly curved and crafted to excellence, this heirloom-quality necklace is something to behold. This necklace can be engraved in the polished silver panel or the reverse.

The Shamrock

Emblematic of the Patron Saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, a Shamrock makes a perfect gift for the proud Irish person in your life. They'll delight in showing off this beautiful icon of Irishness all year round.

Our Sterling Silver Heavy Shamrock Necklace, like all of the pieces in this range, is of heirloom weight and quality. Trinity Knots adorn the three leaves of the Shamrock shape. This is a reminder that St Patrick used the Shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. This piece is sure to be loved.

My Irish Jeweler

Born in Co. Antrim and reared in Dublin, I was fascinated with Gaelic culture from an early age. I suppose it's not surprising given my mother inherited a grá for the Irish language from my grandfather, an Irish school headmaster. And that grá continues! My brother and sister are now Gaelic teachers here in Ireland, my niece is an award winning Irish dancer, and I proudly work to share Irish culture through our Irish and Celtic Jewelry at My Irish Jeweler!

I love researching and reading about the history of Irish design. It's at the core of what we do here at My Irish Jeweler. I find much of it so interesting that I have to share what I find. I hope you enjoy it!

I love your story already. How hard would it be to just pick up and move to Ireland? I am serious about living there, but need to learn so much more about your beautiful country. I'm only half Irish, but I feel it...
