Irish Hallmarks by Dublin Assay Office

Established in 1637 to supervise gold and silversmithing throughout Ireland, the Dublin Assay Office is still the quality mark today.

Back in 1637, hallmarks from the Dublin assay included two parts

1) The goldsmith's own mark or maker's mark denoting the craftsperson responsible for making the piece

2) A fineness mark denoting the quality of the metal. A crowned harp was applied for 22 karat gold and sterling silver. Sterling silver was defined as 925 parts of fine silver in each 1000.

An additional letter system was introduced in 1638 and used in conjunction with the above marks to mark the year in which the piece was made or hallmarked. The letter changes on January 1 each year.

Another addition to the hallmark was made in 1730, the mark of Hibernia. This mark indicated that duty had been paid for the item and was used on all articles of Irish manufacture hallmarked at the Dublin Assay Office.

Hallmarking has largely stayed the same since then, but has been simplified somewhat with the date system dropped.
